Introduction

Garden Makeovers was commissioned to undertake a complete transformation of both the front and rear gardens of a Kilmacolm residence, located within a conservation area. The brief called for a serene, Japanese-inspired aesthetic, incorporating carefully selected planting, bespoke paving, and contemporary fencing. Careful consideration was required to respect the existing trees, preserve the hedge lines, and work with the site’s natural topography to develop a planning-compliant solution.

Prior to the transformation, the garden was unsafe and unusable, characterised by steep slopes, overgrown dense shrubbery, and a lack of maintenance. The design aimed to create a calm, level, and low-maintenance outdoor environment that could be enjoyed year-round, seamlessly integrating existing mature features—including a prominent specimen tree in the front garden—into the new, cohesive scheme.

 
 

Our Design Process

 

Back garden

  • Secured planning approval for new steps from raised decking, opening access to unused space.
  • Regraded the garden to remove steep slopes, creating a safe, flowing layout.
  • Introduced a level, family-friendly lawn and clearly defined zones.
  • Applied a Japanese-inspired colour scheme for planting to soften the areas where necessary.
  • Built a tiered patio space that allowed for multiple seating opportunities to enjoy the garden, with modern fencing as focal points to enhance the garden.
  • Added new porcelain stepped access to the lawn for a clean, modern transition.
  • Installed timber raised beds filled with lush foliage to soften hard landscaping.
  • Integrated garden lighting to highlight features and create an inviting atmosphere at night.

Front garden

  • New porcelain curved pathway to compliment the curved plant bed filled with new foliage to tie in with the back garden and create an inviting entryway.
  • New monobloc driveway installed to allow for parking spaces and a clean and minimal maintenance needed area.
  • Integrated garden lighting to highlight features and create an inviting atmosphere at night.
